Oldest Member Birthday Celebration:

Dena Carbone, our oldest and longest-standing member, celebrated her 100th birthday this year in April. Her sons held a party for her at the local library where over 100 family members, friends and members of the community came to celebrate with her. After her sons spoke, she stood up and thanked everyone for coming and reminded us that it is so important to stay active and in touch with people so that you have a lot of friends and good memories to cherish for the rest of your life. How inspiring!

This year, members of our club received word that a past Soroptimst board member, who has been the primary caretaker for her two young granddaughters, fell seriously ill and was unable to care for her granddaughters temporarily. A dear friend, Kathy Pruett (also friends with some current board members) and her family, took the girls into their home until Suzanne would be well enough to care for them again. Our Club felt that Kathy went above and beyond her responsibility as a friend and made a $250 donation to her to help care for the girls.

Club Awards:

Our Women's Opportunity Award Winner for 2013 was Melissa McCue (pictured right).
This monetary award, a signature project of Soroptimist, is granted to a female head of household pursuing higher education to improve her employment opportunities. She may use the funds as she wishes while she is enrolled in school. Our club winner then proceeds to the Regional level and, if declared winner there, proceeds to the Federation level for judging.

Service Projects:

Ruth's House is a non-profit organization in Haverhill, MA that accepts donations from the community for their store that is open to the public. They provide gently-used clothing, furniture, toys, and other household items at discounted prices to those in need in the Greater Haverhill area. Many years ago, our Soroptimist Club began supporting Ruth's House throughout the year, especially around the holidays. One need that we have continued to provide is new bras and underwear for women.

Another important program that our club has sponsored for many years was recently renamed "Sister Power" (formerly called "Images"), by the young women participants. Timberlane Middle School Health Teacher, Myra Hogan, (pictured above) coordinates this after school program to encourage participants to become confident, educated women. They work on self-esteem, healthy choices, career opportunities, and other topics in which the girls are interested.

For many years our club has donated to the Pregnancy Care Center in Haverhill which provides support, clothing and beauty care products to the women they serve. Typically, we donate clothing for the women around the Holidays and have a "Baby Shower" for the new mothers at one of our spring meetings.
